Can Metastatic Breast Cancer Be Cured or Controlled by hemotherapy?

چکیده
I would first like to discuss the concept of cure, because we tend to use "cure" as a general term for a variety of diseases, and I suspect that we mean different things in different situations. For example, a pneumococcal pneumonia cure is an entirely different concept from a cure in childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia, which also differs from a metastatic breast cancer cure. I believe that a cure is possible in all three of these diseases, but it may mean something different in each. If one reviews the existing literature and evaluates cure of primary breast cancer, one sees that while most recurrences occur during the first few years after initial diagnosis, there are actually documented cases of first metastasis or relapse between 10 and 40 years after diagnosis. Thus, one could make a case that it is impossible to decrease the hazard rate to zero in primary breast cancer. Does this mean that no patient is cured? Of course not. It simply means that we cannot establish an arbitrary number of months or years at which time all of those who remain free of recurrence are cured.

متن کاملInternational Guidelines for Management of Metastatic Breast Cancer: Can Metastatic Breast Cancer Be Cured?
A distinctive subset of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is oligometastatic disease, which is characterized by single or few detectable metastatic lesions. The existing treatment guidelines for patients with localized MBC include surgery, radiotherapy, and regional chemotherapy. The European School of Oncology-Metastatic Breast Cancer Task Force addressed the management of these patients in its f...
متن کاملBreast 99mTc-MDP uptake in a man mimicking metastatic lesion of the ribs
A 65 year-old overweight man with a history of prostate cancer was referred to our nuclear medicine department for bone scanning. Anterior projection images showed two small foci of increased radiotracer uptake corresponding to the anterior arcs of the right and left sixth ribs, which were interpreted as suspicious for metastatic involvement. Eight months later the ...
متن کاملNovel Biomarkers Aim at Detecting Metastatic Sentinel Lymph Nodes in Breast Cancer
Background: Intra-operative molecular diagnostic assays are currently used for the detection of lymph node metastases. The objective of this study was to find new biomarkers to improve diagnostic accuracy in the detection of metastatic axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer patients. Methods: We applied an absolute quantitative real-time RT-PCR to quantitate the expression of CK19, KLK11, and CL...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of CD4+ and CD8+ T Cells in Tumor Tissues, Lymph Nodes and the Peripheral Blood from Patients with Breast Cancer
Background: CD4+ and CD8+ T cells are the main types of lymphocytes in cell-mediated immunity and play a central role in the induction of efficient immune responses against tumors. The frequencies of T cell subtypes in the peripheral blood and tumor tissues, and draining lymph nodes (dLN) can be considered as useful markers for evaluation of the immune system in cancers. Methods: In this study,...
